What Is Areola Tattooing?

Areola Scar Camouflage
Areola scar camouflage is a specialized treatment that conceals scars around the nipples after procedures like breast augmentation, lift, reduction, or nipple surgery. During your consultation, we customize the color and shape to closely match your natural areolas.

Using precise micropigmentation, we blend the scar into the surrounding skin, restoring a more natural, balanced appearance. The result is a smoother, more cohesive look that enhances overall confidence.

3D Areola Tattooing
3D Areola Tattooing is a specialized cosmetic tattoo technique that helps breast cancer survivors regain a sense of wholeness after reconstruction surgery. By using detailed shading and color blending, a realistic nipple and areola are created, giving the illusion of depth and dimension on a flat surface.

Performed by skilled medical tattoo artists, this procedure replicates the natural look and texture of the areola. While results are semi-permanent, the emotional and aesthetic benefits can be deeply meaningful and long-lasting.

Nipple Tinting Tattoo
Nipple tinting is a cosmetic tattoo procedure that enhances or restores the natural color of the nipple and areola. It’s ideal for those who have experienced fading due to surgery, aging, or other factors. Using custom-blended pigments and gentle tattooing techniques, the treatment adds subtle, natural-looking color to create a more defined and aesthetically pleasing appearance. It can be done on its own or as a finishing touch after areola reconstruction or 3D areola tattooing

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at nicolefmayo@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

You should wait at least 12 weeks after your final surgery before getting your areola tattooe and you are cleared by your surgeon.

For any scars, we recommend waiting until they are fully healed, which typically takes at least 6 months.

If you’re unsure about your readiness, feel free to email photos to nicole@nikkifaydermalarts.com for a consultation.

Yes. We only use compliant and sterile-grade inks from reputable manufacturers who have been in business for over a century.

There are no national regulations for this specialized service, so choosing an experienced, trained, trauma-informed paramedical tattoo artist is crucial. Many hospitals offer referrals, but few professionals are trained in 3D areola tattooing. Our studio specializes in this artistic tattoo application.

Most clients report little to no pain. Sensation often depends on nerve endings post-surgery. We prioritize your comfort every step of the way, and we’ll walk you through what to expect before your session.

We use numbing creams as necessary and sparingly to keep you as comfortable as possible.  They can interfere with how the pigment settles into scar tissue. Our desire is for a vibrant, long-lasting, and natural-looking result.

Typically, your session is 2-3 hours. This includes time for design and size consultation, pigment selection, and the tattoo itself. It’s never rushed—we want the best results possible.

Wear something easy to remove and loose, like a button-up top. We'll provide a robe to keep you comfortable during the procedure and apply a breathable, protective dressing afterward.

In many cases, yes. Areola tattooing is often classified as part of breast reconstruction under the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act. We offer medical billing paperwork free of charge for all of our clients to help you get the coverage you deserve.

Technically, 3D areola tattoos are designed to be permanent, but considering that the skin is compromised and often scarred, it can soften the tattoo faster than healthy skin. With proper care, most clients enjoy their results for a few years before opting for a touch-up session. A simple color refresh can be done in about an hour.

Yes, all tattoos fade or change due to sun exposure, aging, and health. Most clients refresh color every 5–10 years. UV protection is recommended on healed areas to ensure longevity.

Through advanced shading, color blending, and light manipulation, we create the illusion of a raised, natural nipple. Even up close, the effect is realistic. It truly is an art form, and every artist has their own style. 30 years of detailed portrait work provides the foundation for Nikki’s hyper-realistic designs.

Absolutely. We offer private, no-pressure consultations to answer your questions, review your history and go over options to ensure you feel confident moving forward.

Yes. We only use compliant and sterile-grade inks from reputable manufacturers who have been in business for over a century.

No. Tattoo pigment is deposited just beneath the epidermis into the dermis, far from any implant. This keeps the procedure safe for those with breast implants.

We follow strict OSHA and CDC protocols: single-use sterile needles, hospital-grade disinfectants, autoclaved tools, face masks, and fresh gloves for every client. We are BBP certified.

Temporary redness, swelling, mild scabbing, or itching are common immediately after getting tattooed.

Yes, a one-on-one consultation (20–30 minutes) will help us understand your goals, assess your skin, and ensure you feel comfortable moving forward.

Yes. We custom-blend pigments to match your skin tone, existing areolas, or reconstructed nipples to ensure symmetry and lifelike results. We will test pigments on top of your skin before the procedure to ensure we are both happy with the color before tattooing.

There are typically two sessions. The second may just be a touch-up. The goal is to avoid overworking the skin in one session. After 8–10 weeks, the second session enhances detail, 3D effect, and balance.

You'll receive custom aftercare instructions. Typically, you'll wear a waterproof dressing for 7–10 days, cleanse with fragrance-free lotion, and avoid intense activity and sun. Healing completes in 4–6 weeks. A touch-up happens 8–10 weeks later.

We offer free temporary nipple tattoos that fade in 7–10 days. These let you "try it on" before committing. Book an appointment—it only takes about 5 minutes to apply.
